Senate Bill 50 was recently proposed for the purpose of establishing an industrial hemp industry in Pennsylvania. If passed, Individuals and entities would be allowed to grow, cultivate, process and market industrial hemp.

While a member of the cannabis family, industrial hemp has a very low level of THC. From textiles to building materials to food to paper and energy products,  industrial hemp can be used in more than 50,000 potential applications and, until the last century, was commonly grown in Pennsylvania.  To decrease importing of hemp from China, France and Canada, the federal Farm Bill of 2014  authorized pilot programs across the county.

Legislators, with an eye to their farming constituents, are proposing the establishment of a state licensing board that would regulate the cultivation, growth and sale of industrial hemp.  Hear from the bill’s sponsors Sen. Judy Schwank of Berks County and Sen. Mike Folmer of Lebanon County, as well as advocates and agriculturalists.

While medicinal and recreational marijuana bills are heating up at the Capitol, industrial hemp is an issue of interest to Pennsylvania’s many farming communities.  Learn more on what this could mean for your fields and farms.

Teleconference is scheduled to begin promptly at 12 noon.  Cost: $10 per phone line for PNA members.  $20 for non-members.  To register, email Kathleen Landis or phone her at 717-703-3012.
