Calkins Media Video Training Program - Level One for Beginners: Basics with Smartphones

Offered once again, this is our most popular video session.  This is part of a series of video training modules to be offered through the Calkins Media Video Certification Program, featuring award-winning presenter Drew Berry.

Level One will help beginners to establish a comfort level with basic video newsgathering using their smart phones with iPhones preferred for this class.  Hands-on training includes basic shot composition, stable video, sound and lighting optimization and editing through the iMovie app.Video Training

In order to receive certification, participants must complete the full day of training on Oct. 19 as well as finish follow up homework with the presenter.  Completion of the follow up requirements must occur within two weeks of the training at a “Satisfactory” competence level to receive a certificate.

$49 for PNA members.  $99 for non-members.  10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Lunch included. Please indicate, when registering, if you have any special dietary needs.  PLEASE NOTE: Android users are asked to arrive at 9 a.m. in order to prepare their phones; iPhone users can arrive at 10 a.m.

Space in this hands-on class is limited to the first 12 registrants.  If, after registering, you are unable to attend, we kindly request that you cancel your registration at least 48 hours in advance to allow others the opportunity to participate.  Registrations cancelled less than 48 hours in advance will not be credited.

To register, email Teresa Shaak or phone her at 717-703-3003, by Oct. 13.  A confirmation will be emailed to pre-registered participants prior to the training with specific requirements and directions for participation.  PLEASE NOTE: iPhones are recommended for this training.  Please be sure that the latest iMovie app is loaded onto your iPhone before arriving Oct. 19.  Also, please be sure to have enough memory space available on your device(s) in order to shoot and edit.  If using an Android phone and still interested in this session, please tell us the exact type and model (i.e., Samsung Galaxy S6) to be shared with the instructor.  Android users must bring an iPad or a Mac laptop with them to the training session in order to complete the editing part of the certification program.

Presenter: Drew Berry
Drew Berry is the Emmy Award-winning President and CEO of Drew Berry & Associates, LLC. He is a former television station Vice President & General Manager, Executive Producer for the ABC-TV owned and operated station in New York City,Video Training 6 Director of News for the CBS-TV station in Philadelphia and manager or producer at stations in New Orleans, Baltimore, San Antonio and Austin, Texas.  He was a producer for CNN in its infancy before being lured to the number one-ranked  ABC television station in Philadelphia.  He earned his two Emmy's in his management role at the CBS-TV station in Philadelphia.

Berry serves as an advisor to journalists and aspiring journalists across the country. He is frequently guest faculty leading discussions on management and leadership at universities.  He also has been guest faculty teaching leadership at the Poynter Institute. Currently, he is a Visiting Professional in the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications at Hampton University, Hampton, VA, where he is teaching media management.

Berry is an influential leader in the media industry.  He recently accepted an invitation by Comcast/NBC Universal to be a member of a prestigious advisory council. He has been a trustee of the Scripps Howard Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the E.W. Scripps Company which owns multiple television stations, newspapers and online media operations.  He has been chosen as screening judge for the prestigious duPoint Awards and a Commentary Judge for the National Journalism Awards.  He exhibited his crisis management and strategic planning skills most recently with the National Association of Black Journalists, Inc. which resulted in a collaborative effort yielding positive  results in the area of finance, programming and national office operations.

Among his many awards are a Congressional Achievement Award in recognition of business achievement, a Maryland Governor's Citation for business achievement,  Service Above Self Award from the Rotary Club,  Man of the Year A.M.E. Church, YMCA  Adult Achiever of the Year, just to name a few.
