8:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. --  HR ISSUES:  What You Don’t Know CAN Hurt You

Is your company compliant with all current Federal and State regulations? Are you worried that you may be overlooking an error that could cost your company thousands of dollars in fines? Whether you are your company’s Accidental HR™ Manager or an HR pro, this session reviews the current key regulations by company size with a follow up of what the actual risk is when functioning in the “real” world. The session concludes with practical steps to help any size organization minimize their exposure while maximizing the impact of their HR department!   After this session you will be able to:  identify applicable laws/regulations against the size of your company to recognize what you ARE responsible for and reduce incidents; better recognize the real risk in your environments to minimize exposure, reduce fines and claims, and gain peace of mind knowing that all of your bases are covered; and immediately apply practical steps through a plan of action to reduce time wasted, minimize risk/exposure, and focus on your primary job duties.   Presenter: Karen Young, SPHR, SHRM-SCP, President, HR Resolutions

10:15 a.m. - 11:45 a.m.  -- HR ISSUES: YOU Pick the Topic!

Please indicate when registering which session you prefer.  We’ll select the top vote-getter and Karen Young will focus on that topic.  Choices include:

1) It’s OK to Say…”You’re Fired” -- discussion of at-will employment, making the termination decision, evaluating the risk

2) Getting to the “Will Do” -- improving recruiting and selection, common interview mistakes, the “do” and “don’t” ask questions.

3) Wait…Don’t Go – Why Good Employees Leave Good Employers -- at-will vs. employment contract, why do employees leave, exit interviews, etc.

11:45 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.  -- LUNCH

12:30 p.m. - 2:30 p.m.  -- AD REVENUE: Understanding and Responding to your Competition

In this session, you will learn to understand and respond to local advertising competition. As advertising revenue continues to fragment, this skill has become increasingly important for sales people who are looking to secure their share of the local market.  Covered during the session will be a discussion of media ranging from traditional (broadcast television, outdoor, radio, etc.) to new media sources (programmatic, social, search, etc.), discussing their strengths and weaknesses as compared to the local newspaper.  Also covered will be media types utilized and average spend from local categories (restaurants, auto, service industry, etc.).  Attendees will leave with a worksheet offering scripted responses to various client categories, sourced from both the presenters and other attendees.  Presenter: Matt Caylor, Director of Interactive Advertising, MANSI Media

PROGRAM REGISTRATION:  Twelve fellowships are offered to weekly community newspaper publishers and managers. Included are all sessions, welcome reception with heavy hors d’oeuvres, Saturday breakfast, Saturday lunch and refreshments as well as one overnight room accommodation.
