How to Join the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association
Benefits of joining the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association
Becoming a member of the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association (PNA) will benefit your organization in a multitude of ways. Our mission is to advance the business interests of Pennsylvania news media organizations and to promote a free and independent press. Whether you work in management, editorial, advertising, production or circulation, the PNA is here to help.
Legal Hotline: One of PNA’s most popular services is the Legal Hotline. PNA attorneys routinely provide members with advice on open records, open meetings, independent contractors, libel, telemarketing copyright, Pennsylvania’s Shield Law, the first amendment, advertising, HIPAA and more.
Lobbying: PNA’s government affairs department represents the interest of Pennsylvania’s news media companies before the General Assembly on a daily basis. It advocates for stronger open records and open meeting laws, and against bills that would damage the newspaper industry or the public’s right to know.
MANSI: The Association’s for-profit subsidiary, MANSI Media, is a one-order, one-bill advertising placement service specializing in newspapers in their digital properties. MANSI works with agencies and clients to simplify the ad placement process for regional and national buys.
- PennSCAN Program & 2x2 Network: Members of the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association can add revenue to their bottom line by participating in MANSI’s statewide ad networks. Participating newspapers receive rebate checks twice per year based on the number of ads that run through the network. Newspapers that sell ads can offer advertisers across the state into either network and keep 50% of the cost of the network published rate.
PNA Events: PNA facilitates numerous events throughout the year, creating networking and informational opportunities for our members, no matter what your area of responsibility is. America East, our largest event, is the premier regional newspaper and news media conference and trade show on the East Coast. Held in Spring at the Hershey Lodge & Convention Center, it is the most valuable and affordable event serving decision-makers in the news media industry.
Publications: PNA has ample publications designed to keep our members up-to-date on the news you need, industry happenings, and member and association news. Each Friday, PNA issues the “Legal Update” e-newsletter, which takes an in-depth look at the latest legal and legislative news affecting our industry in Pennsylvania and beyond. In addition to weekly and quarterly e-newsletters, PNA has developed a series of “Big Books” that are intended to help members identify new opportunities to generate revenue and grow audience.
Content Marketplace: Located in the members-only section of the PNA website, the Content marketplace provides a variety of content that can be used in your news product. There are three types of content available: Free, Subscription, and Paid. Examples include PSU coverage of special sporting events, such as the Croke Park Classic.
Why Newspapers: Visit the “Why Newspapers” section of the PNA website to access tools designed to assist members with sales, marketing, readership and other initiatives. Some of these tools include our Big Book series, Competitive Media Analysis, Tweetable Truths, Marketing Sheets, Special Sections, PNA White Papers and Promotional Ads.
PNA Launchpad: PNA LaunchPad is the first statewide pilot program connecting early stage digital companies and local media companies. Through LaunchPad, media-related startups can connect with customers, and media companies benefit from new technologies and revenue streams to better position themselves for the future.
Press Passes: Offered by the PNA, a Pennsylvania Press Pass helps you gain access to accident and incident scenes. While a Press Pass is not a government ID, it has been widely publicized to law enforcement agencies as a way to help police and other emergency personnel quickly identify and verify media personnel.
Press Release Service: PR MediaRelease Pennsylvania distributes press releases electronically to editors in Pennsylvania. The easy-to-use self-service platform allows for video, web links and more.
Statehouse Stringer: A low-cost, on-demand story request service brought to PNA members through a partnership with Pennsylvania Legislative Service. Statehouse Stringer allows you to provide coverage on local issues being discussed in Harrisburg, keep your readers updated on the latest issues from the Capitol and allows you to supplement your news coverage with what your legislators are supporting and opposing.
Job Bank: PNA members can post job openings on the PNA website free of charge for a four-week run. After four weeks, members can request an additional run. Ads are updated weekly.
PNA Foundation Training: The PNA Foundation provides a variety of training opportunities for PNA members, students and citizens. The Foundation produces sessions on the latest topics, while responding to members’ requests for specialized education across all departments. Each year, more than 35 workshops, webinars, teleconferences are regional seminars are held.
- PNA Foundation Contests: The PNA Foundation offers various contests throughout the year designed to recognize excellence in journalism across the state.
