PHILADELPHIA — Three Pennsylvania journalists have won the Truth in Finance Award from the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA). The award was created by PICPA’s Forensic and Litigation Services Committee to honor excellent, balanced reporting that clarifies financial issues, uncovers financial fraud, or exposes fraudulent activities that harm the financial well being of individuals, communities, or companies.
The award recognized journalists from three categories.
Tracy Davidson and producer Alexis Leonard of NBC 10 WCAU won the Television/Radio category for their report “Gas Inspections: Getting Nailed at the Pump.”
Chris Mondics of The Inquirer won the large newspaper (newspapers with circulation of more than 49,000) category for his piece “Targeting Elderly, Many Not Caught.”
Howard Frank of the Pocono Record won the small newspapers (newspapers with circulation of fewer than 49,000) category for his piece “$1,000 a Week in Overtime.”
Judges included communications professionals, professors, editors, and members of the Forensic and Litigation Services Committee. “Lisa Myers, a CPA and chair of this program commented, “We initiated this award because it is so critical for consumers to understand basic financial issues that affect them personally or the community in which they live.”
Winners will be honored Nov. 11 at the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association’s Newspaper of the Year brunch as PICPA’s guest. Winners will also receive a $500 prize and a certificate.
