HARRISBURG, Pa., Oct. 11, 2013 – The Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association (PNA) is proud to present Ralph Martin with the 2013 PNA Lifetime Achievement Award.

Established in 1998, the award recognizes an individual with a track record of excellence and service to newspapers and journalism.

Ralph Martin is president and CEO of Trib Total Media, Inc. He joined the company in 2003 as general manager of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Under his tenure, Trib Total Media has grown into a regional news and information operation serving southwestern Pennsylvania with daily and weekly newspapers, Pennysaver weekly shoppers, specialty magazines and numerous websites.

Martin began his newspaper career in 1976 with Thomson Newspapers. In his 16 years with Thomson Newspapers, he was promoted to several management positions, becoming president and chief operation officer in 1992. In 1997, he founded Community Newspaper Holdings, Inc. (CNHI), becoming the company’s president and chief executive officer. CNHI experienced significant growth under Martin’s leadership.

A nomination letter from John Kirkpatrick, president of PA Media Group, and Tom Northrop, president and publisher of Observer Publishing Company, details Martin’s dedication and service to the PNA: “Ralph has devoted his time and considerable talent in numerous ways, including leading the PNA’s most recent strategic planning endeavor. He has been a sounding board for fellow board members, PNA staff and PNA leaders.”

Perhaps more importantly, the letter touches upon Martin’s influence on his news media organization and the industry in general. “His influence on his operation and the entire landscape of journalism in Western Pennsylvania has been stunning,” they write. “He took a paper from Greensburg, Pennsylvania and turned it into a major and powerful force in the entire Pittsburgh region – despite the intense competition – through shrewd acquisitions, clustering, and innovative approaches both internally and in our industry, partnerships, intense marketing, and strong leadership.”

The Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented Nov. 7, 2013, during the PNA Annual Convention at The Sands Resort & Casino in Bethlehem, Pa.

The PNA, founded in 1925, is the nonprofit trade association for print and online media in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Its mission is to advance the business interests of Pennsylvania news media companies and to promote a free and independent press. It has more than 300 newspaper and media members, including daily, weekly, and college newspapers and online publications.
