PNA Partners with Penn State for Croke Park Classic coverage

  • Jul 23, 2014

Dear PNA Members,

The PNA and Penn State’s John Curley Center for Sports Journalism are partnering to bring you free coverage of the Croke Park Classic, the football game between Penn State and Central Florida in Dublin, Ireland, on Saturday, Aug. 30.

The purpose of this note is to remind you that this project is coming up, and to provide some basic information about how it will work.

The original announcement for the project can be found here:
The coverage plan breaks down as follows:

  • A team of eight students in print, photos and multimedia, guided by a three-person faculty team of experienced journalists, will arrive in Dublin on Saturday, Aug. 23. Starting on Sunday, Aug. 24, members will have access to print copy, glances / boxes and photos produced by the team. We also hope to provide video packages later in the week. Coverage will become increasingly robust as we approach game day.
  • Starting Aug. 24, we will provide members with a glance of sport / game-related activities happening in Ireland that day. This will be made available to you by 7:30 a.m. Eastern. By 1 p.m. Eastern we will post a daily digest of the content we are providing that day. Both the glance and the digest will be posted earlier in the day if at all possible.
  • What kinds of stories will the Curley Center / PNA team produce? Each day we will have a news/feature story that anchors coverage related to the game in some way. For example, one such story will address the importance of the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), which is hosting the game. We’ll look at the economic impact of the game, and cover the high school football matchup between Cedar Cliff and Penn Manor on Friday, Aug. 29. We’ll keep the copy tight. Beyond the anchor story, expect pieces that run 300 to 600 words and are broken down into copy blocks where possible.
  • You’ll receive our content through shared folders on More details about this will be forthcoming in a separate note within the next few weeks.
  • The project is part of a for-credit course in which the student team will be acting essentially as the PNA’s news bureau for the week. The group will be editorially independent, but because the work is for credit, it will not be possible for the students to freelance for individual papers or broadcast members. Also note that all the team’s work will be made available to all the PNA members.

We hope you will find this material helpful and will make use of it. Please do not hesitate to email or call me. Cell is best for calls.
