Nine members of the Meyersdale Area High School journalism staff visited The Tribune-Democrat in Johnstown on Friday for a tour and discussion of the news business.

The students – under veteran teacher Steve Smerbeck – saw the running press and met with newsroom staff to discuss story planning, page design, editorial writing, digital news, social media and other topics.

Editors and the students discussed the results of a new Knight Foundation poll that showed the highest level of appreciation for the First Amendment among high schoolers in 10 years. Other topics included "fake news," privacy of information on the internet and bullying on social media.

Following the meeting, the students said they planned to launch a Twitter account for the school paper and would work to expand engagement between the school district and other organizations in their community.
