Tom Murse wrote in his nomination letter, “I can think of no one more deserving of this award than Bumsted, whose contributions to the citizens of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania have enlightened readers, policymakers and prosecutors about the activities of local and state governmental officials.” In addition to his many articles exposing violations of public trust and political scandals, Bumsted also “strives to give readers a deeper understanding not just of what happened, but how it was allowed to happen – and why it’s likely to occur again.”

Bumsted began his career at the Chambersburg Public Opinion in 1974 and then continued to cover government officials in Pennsylvania, Florida and Washington. After covering Harrisburg politics for the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, Bumsted was hired by LNP and now oversees a team of reporters for The Caucus, a publication covering state government and politics. Under his leadership, The Caucus has won several awards, including Best New Print Product and the top regional brand in North America by the International News Media Association.

In addition to his vast body of work exposing government corruption and scandals, Bumsted has also mentored young reporters through the Pennsylvania Legislative Correspondents’ Association internship program. Three members of  The Caucus team are past Bumsted interns.
