HARRISBURG, Pa., Oct. 11, 2013 – The 2013 Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association (PNA) Benjamin Franklin Award for Excellence has been awarded to James McClure, editor of the York Daily Record/Sunday News.

Established in 1998, this award recognizes individuals who have performed an outstanding service or accomplishment to their newspapers, to the newspaper industry in general, to their local communities, or to the PNA, that reflected positively on the newspaper industry in Pennsylvania.

McClure has been the editor of the York Daily Record/Sunday News since May 2004. Prior to that, he was the managing editor of the newspaper for 15 years. In addition to his duties in York, McClure serves as east region editor for Digital First Media providing oversight for 24 newsrooms and approximately 50 weeklies. In that capacity, he was a senior editor on on-site DFM teams that covered the Newtown school shootings and the Boston Marathon bombing.

In addition to this, McClure is the author or co-author of seven books on York County history and writes daily entries for his York County history blog, www.yorktownsquare.com.

McClure was awarded the PNA Foundation’s John Fisher Internet Vision Award in 2010 and headed two York Daily Record/Sunday News journalism/history teams that received PNA Foundation Public Service Awards. Under his leadership, the York Daily Record/Sunday News was named Pennsylvania’s Newspaper of the Year in 2004 and 2011.

In her nomination letter, York Daily Record/Sunday News publisher Sara Glines wrote, “Jim has led our newsroom through great change and significant growth….He’s turned a traditional newspaper newsroom into a 24-hour news operation that appreciates the possibilities and opportunities of every media platform available. And he’s done it all with a quiet, caring demeanor and firm determination for success that has earned him the respect of all who work with him.”

McClure’s former publisher, Fred Uffelman, also supported the nomination, writing that “McClure has groomed a crop of journalists who credit him with stoking their passion for excellence. Attend any newspaper conference in this state, and you will meet top editors and award-winning journalists who gather in small groups to laugh as they reminisce about their years working with Jim McClure.”

The Benjamin Franklin Award for Excellence will be presented Nov. 7, 2013, during the PNA Annual Convention at The Sands Resort & Casino in Bethlehem, Pa.

The PNA, founded in 1925, is the nonprofit trade association for print and online media in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Its mission is to advance the business interests of Pennsylvania news media companies and to promote a free and independent press. It has more than 300 newspaper and media members, including daily, weekly, and college newspapers and online publications.
