HARRISBURG, Pa. (October 9, 2014) — The Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association (PNA) is proud to present the 2014 Lifetime Achievement Award to John A. Kirkpatrick III.

Established in 1998, the award recognizes an individual with a track record of excellence and service to newspapers and journalism.

Kirkpatrick is being honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his outstanding work and dedication to the newspaper industry, PennLive/The Patriot-News, Lancaster Newspapers, Inc., and the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association. Kirkpatrick is currently president of Lancaster Newspapers, Inc., overseeing the development, production, content, sales, and marketing of the Intelligencer Journal, Lancaster New Era, Sunday News and LancasterOnline.

Kirkpatrick began his career as a reporter in Hanover before serving in editorial positions in Ohio, Syracuse and San Francisco. He returned to Pennsylvania in 1991 to become editor and then publisher and president at The Patriot-News. Under his leadership, the newspaper received multiple PNA Newspaper of the Year awards and its first Pulitzer Prize. In 2013, Kirkpatrick was named president of Lancaster Newspapers, Inc.

Former Patriot-News publisher Raymond L. Gover wrote in his nomination letter, “He has brought a sense of confidence and enthusiasm to departments throughout the organization. I sense they realize they are part of something special in being a member of his team.”

In announcing the new president of Lancaster Newspapers, Inc., publisher Robert M. Krasne said, Kirkpatrick “has the experience and temperament to help us make sure we continue to meet the needs of our readers, our advertisers and our community.”

Kirkpatrick has also been an active member of the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association, serving in leadership capacities on multiple boards and committees throughout his career.  He served as Chairman of the PNA Board in 2008 and is currently Chairman of the PNA Foundation Board of Trustees.  “We are delighted to present this award to Kirk; it is well-deserved,” said Teri Henning, PNA president.  “The PNA has benefitted greatly from his active and enthusiastic participation in our events and initiatives, and we are grateful for his extraordinary generosity and support.”

The PNA Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented on Nov. 6, 2014, during the PNA Annual Convention held at the Omni William Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh, Pa.
