Gene Foreman earns PNA Benjamin Franklin Award for Excellence

HARRISBURG, Pa. (September 7, 2017) — The Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association (PNA) is proud to present the 2017 Benjamin Franklin Award for Excellence to Gene Foreman of the Philadelphia Inquirer. The Benjamin Franklin Award was established in 1998 to recognize outstanding service that reflects positively on the news media industry in Pennsylvania.

In her nomination letter, Marie Hardin, Dean of Penn State’s College of Communications, stated that Foreman has a “record that truly epitomizes excellence and service to newspapers and to journalism.” His remarkable efforts have elevated the level of Pennsylvania journalism, as evidenced by the 18 Pulitzer Prizes awarded to The Philadelphia Inquirer under his leadership.

In addition, Foreman has been a mentor to current and future journalists as a visiting professor, consultant and author. Hardin also noted, “He is well known among the best editors in the country, and he has a reputation for ethical decision-making, news judgment and editing that is surpassed by few. … He has impacted the lives of hundreds of journalists over the years, most of whom developed their careers at newspapers across Pennsylvania.”

The award will be presented to Foreman at the PNA Annual Dinner on Thursday evening, November 2, at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel.

Mark Segal earns PNA Benjamin Franklin Award for Excellence

HARRISBURG, Pa. (September 7, 2017) — The Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association (PNA) is proud to present the 2017 Benjamin Franklin Award for Excellence to Mark Segal of the Philadelphia Gay News. The Benjamin Franklin Award was established in 1998 to recognize outstanding service that reflects positively on the news media industry in Pennsylvania.

In her nomination letter, former PGN Editor, Sarah Blazucki, wrote that, “[s]ince its inception, PGN has adhered to strict professional standards, and Segal has worked tirelessly to earn the respect it now has as a community newspaper.” She further emphasized PGN’s leadership and important role in the news media industry, writing that “[t]he paper is an award-winning media outlet, recognized by its peers for reporting. For the community, the paper champions its causes and fosters growth and communication. For the newspaper industry, and other media outlets, PGN is a resource.” As emphasized by the publication’s staff and the selection committee, Segal has provided an unparalleled voice and platform for the LGBT community, while maintaining the professionalism and ideals of meaningful – and critically important - journalism.

This year’s selection committee emphasized Segal’s remarkable achievements and contributions to the PGN, the LGBT community, and the news media industry in Pennsylvania and beyond. From the founding of the Philadelphia Gay News in 1975, to his leadership and extensive news coverage on issues of concern to the LGBT community, Segal has been an inspirational leader in the Philly community and far beyond.

The award will be presented at the PNA Annual Dinner on Thursday evening, November 2, at the Loews Philadelphia Hotel.
