Digital Content Producer – Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Digital Content Producer – Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Western Pennsylvania’s largest news organization and recipient of the 2022 and ’23 Keystone Media Awards’ top honor for large newspapers, is looking for a digital content producer and editor to join its talented team of journalists. This producer will play a critical role in the PG’s digital news strategy to boost audience growth and engagement on all platforms.

We are looking for a journalistically savvy self-starter who will help shape our news coverage by assisting in the management of our website; working closely with our audience development editor on reader initiatives via social media, newsletters and other means; and writing and/or curating breaking news and trending local, regional, statewide and other news.

The producer will need to be fully engaged in the Pittsburgh region’s news cycle by staying familiar with public officials and other key regional stakeholders, remaining educated about ongoing story threads across numerous newsroom beats and analyzing which topics are resonating most with our paid users.

This producer also will utilize social media and other platforms to find coverage opportunities and enhance our digital storytelling — from breaking news to the arts, food, sports and more.

In addition to identifying content production opportunities, this person will also perform other digital team duties, including laying out the Post-Gazette homepage and landing pages, posting to social media, enhancing packages with multimedia content, writing engaging headlines that boost audience engagement and editing content.

This is a highly visible and rewarding position within the newsroom, and you’ll be a key decision-maker who collaborates with editors and reporters across all departments and beats every day as we continue to bolster our digital subscriber base.

  • Digital presentation: Enhancing story packages with the creative use of embedded visuals (video, infographics, photos, etc.).
  • Managing the homepage and key landing pages of the PG website.
  • Producing and writing breaking and trending news content.
  • Tracking social media for trending stories and news developments.
  • Helping bolster our digital subscriber base by honing social media strategies and seeking new opportunities to reach untapped audiences.
  • Brainstorming alternative forms of storytelling and audience engagement, including but not limited to newsletters, social media, Reddit, email blasts, etc.
  • Monitoring local and regional news outlets and other media competitors.
  • Monitoring and posting breaking news as well as other emerging state, national and international content via wire services and media partnerships.

Essential Skills

  • At least 2 years of news media experience, preferably on digital platforms
  • Exceptional news judgment

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, constantly changing environment
  • Ability to collaborate with other news departments as well as with product, design and marketing teams
  • Strong analytical and strategic planning skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills as well as strong interpersonal skills
