The Chestnut Hill Local is an independent, award-winning weekly newspaper serving Chestnut Hill, Mt. Airy, Wyndmoor and communities in Northwest Philadelphia and Eastern Montgomery County. We are currently seeking a dynamic and engaged editor to develop and implement a content strategy that achieves those goals and collaborate with key team members to build a sustainable model for community newspapers. Job Brief

The Editor of the Chestnut Hill Local executes the newspaper’s content strategies and supervises their implementation processes. The main duties include managing a team of writers and freelance correspondents, recruiting qualified content contributors, editing content pieces to ensure they follow tone and style guides and overseeing the production processes.

Editor Duties and Responsibilities

The editor supervises staff writers and editors, as well as correspondents. The Editor assigns stories, approves or denies story pitches from correspondents, recruits new content contributors, assures deadlines are met, works with the publisher to develop content strategies for print and digital products and social media outlets, supervises the content creation process from writing through editing and publishing. Other responsibilities of the editor include:

  • Hiring, coaching and supervising of editorial personnel
  • Recruiting and training of new content contributors (writers, photographers, etc.)
  • Coordinating content for publications
  • Coordinating weekly meeting content meetings
  • Planning and approving assignments for writers and contributors
  • Planning, providing content for ancillary publications such as special sections and magazines.
  • Controlling schedules and enforcing deadlines (for writers, photographers, production team, etc.)
  • Overseeing proofreading procedures and edit copy as necessary
  • Ensuring that the Local is diverse and inclusive, both on its staff and in its publications.
  • Evaluating finalized copy for compliance with policies, style and tone
  • Resolving issue as they arise
  • Attending events or meet with general public on behalf of the Chestnut Hill Local
