Advertisers invest in media that provides a solid return on their investment. A well-designed ad is a cornerstone of building brand awareness, creating demand for products and services and ultimately driving business to the advertiser’s location. In this session, attendees will hear tips, tricks and new ideas from design professionals who work actively within the news media industry and are producing award-winning ads from around the United States. Attendees will learn how to gather the correct information from an advertiser to produce a successful ad and how to work and communicate with the ad design team to ensure a winning result.
This session is built to inform the ad team (advertising sales representatives and ad managers) and the creative team.
Darrell Davis, Vice President of Creative Services
Metro Creative Graphics, Inc.
Darrell Davis is the Vice President of Creative Services for Metro Creative Graphics, Inc. With more than 30 years of experience in media and advertising, Darrell leads a team of art directors, designers and copywriters in producing creative content to help newspapers and their local advertisers thrive.
Darrel attended Syracuse University and earned a BFA in Graphic Design at Binghamton University. He also studied at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, where he remains a resident and ardent observer of evolving design and advertising trends.
JJ Francais, Director of Special Projects
As Director of Special Projects, JJ manages projects for Hilliary Communications and serves as associate publisher for The Chronicle and Southwest Ledger, which are Hilliary-owned weekly newspapers.
His tasks include general supervision of numerous company projects from their conception to completion. JJ serves as Hilliary Communication’s liaison for governmental affairs at the state and federal levels.
As associate publisher, he oversees the business operations of both The Chronicle, a weekly local community newspaper, and Southwest Ledger, which covers business and politics across seven counties in southwest Oklahoma. He takes great pride in supervising and supporting the ad department and makes a point to maintain his skills and focus by building ads as often as he can.
Prior to joining Hilliary, JJ worked in both the commercial and nonprofit sectors, allowing him to foster a strong aptitude for community relations and project management. His previous positions include community news editor of a weekly newspaper and various roles in nonprofit ventures.
He was recently elected Mayor of his hometown and serves as a board member on the General Tommy Franks Museum and Leadership Institute.
Sara Schultz, Advertising Sales Representative
Fillmore County Journal
Sara is an advertising sales representative for the Fillmore County Journal and Visit Bluff Country Magazine. She started with the company as a graphic designer in August 2019 and then slowly started to transition into her sales role in August 2020. Having a background in graphic design has helped her immensely with sales.
Sara earned her bachelor’s degree at Minnesota State University, Mankato. When she isn’t working at the Fillmore County Journal she enjoys golfing, reading, watching movies, hammocking, kayaking, walking her dog Remi, traveling, and spending time with her family and friends!
Josh Schimke, Sr. Graphic Designer
Josh is an Sr. Graphic Designer for Advance Local, one of the largest media groups in the United States. He is proficient in designing for a wide variety of media. Josh earned his BFA in Digital Media at Kendall School of Art & Design. When he isn’t designing, you can find him playing with his son, illustrating, playing drums, or watching The Office.
