Improving Your Coverage of Local State Legislators

The PA State Legislature has a big impact on citizens through a variety of issues, ranging from taxes to abortion. Find out how you can improve coverage of your local state legislators. Learn how to cut through the fluff and hold local legislators accountable for their votes. Look beyond press releases while exploring bills, committees, seniority, calendars and other topics that impact your coverage. Featuring Mark O’Keefe, who spent much of his 45-year career in newspapers as a reporter and editor covering the state Legislature.

Specifically, the session will include:

  • How to cut through all the fluff and hold local legislators accountable for their votes? Do they deserve acclaim or blame? Look beyond their press releases to find out what they’re doing in Harrisburg.
  • Lawmakers introduce hundreds of bills every year, yet only a small percentage only become law. Is the bill introduced just to get headlines, or is there any realistic chance of it becoming law? What things should you consider about the bill’s passage and what questions to ask your legislators?
  • How important are committee assignments, and what do they mean in terms of bills getting passed or at least voted on?
  • How important is seniority in regards to being a legislator? What about newcomers? How much of a pass should they be given? How long does it take to get up to speed in Harrisburg?
  • What is PA politics, and why is it essential in covering state government?
  • How does the Legislature’s calendar make it hard for lawmakers to do their jobs? You might be shocked to find out how many days the Legislature is actually in session?
