Press Conference 2019 in Harrisburg, PA

The PNA Foundation is excited to be offering the annual Pennsylvania Press Conference that brings together hundreds of editors, reporters and broadcasters to learn and to celebrate!

This year’s event is being held at The Hilton Harrisburg, One North Second Street, Harrisburg, PA  17101, on Friday, May 17 and Saturday, May 18.  In conjunction with the Pennsylvania Society of News Editors (PSNE), the Pennsylvania Associated Press Media Editors (PAPME), the Pennsylvania Women’s Press Association (PWPA) and the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ), a slate of timely sessions with top notch speakers will be offered.

Program schedule includes:

  • A Process for Partnering: Let’s Collaborate!  Combining resources to produce better journalism is a great idea, but you need a blueprint. A powerhouse panel will look at various opportunities that are available.
  • Covering #MeToo  Since the Me, Too Movement took hold in 2017, this important topic is presenting new challenges to newsrooms in covering sexual harassment.  From local officials to national icons, accusations of sexual misconduct are making headlines. But allegations are sometimes years old, and victims don’t always want to be identified, among other obstacles. What can you do to effectively, fairly and thoroughly provide this news to readers? What guidelines should you establish? And is this topic hitting a nerve in your own newsroom?
  • Restoring Public Trust in the Media  In 2017, Knight Foundation launched a major initiative to support the role of journalism as essential to a healthy democracy. This initiative was renewed earlier this year with a $300 million commitment to rebuild trust in local news. In addition to its grantmaking, Knight has partnered with Gallup on a multiyear research series to better understand Americans’ opinions of the media and inform solutions.

There will also be several awards celebrations to round out the weekend, beginning with PAPME’s Annual Awards Banquet on Friday evening.  PWPA will hold their Annual Awards Luncheon on Saturday with guest speaker Lisa Gibbs. Gibbs is the director of news partnerships at The Associated Press and the newsroom’s point person on AP’s automation and artificial intelligence strategy group.   SPJ has scheduled their Awards Reception for Saturday, just prior to the PNA Foundation and PSNE’s Keystone Press Awards Reception and Keystone Press Awards Banquet to close out the weekend of celebration.
