How can we operate our Newspapers if we can not get secure and reliable Internet?

Telecom Strategies, an independent voice and data consulting company, has been exploring this issue for many Pennsylvania Newsmedia Association clients we are working with.

In the major cities (Philadelphia, Harrisburg, Scranton and Pittsburgh, etc.), this issue is of no concern. A host of broadband companies have established infrastructure in these areas where their profitability is certain.

For towns in between, broadband is often either inconsistent or not available. In many cases, there are no projected dates for providing reliable service. We have already seen this while working on accounts in Blair County, between Harrisburg and Pittsburg, as well as in Monroe County, near Stroudsburg.

Poor and/or intermittent internet can result in:

  1. Delayed postings on digital sites, particularly those requiring paid subscriptions.
  2. Inability to upload editions to centralized printing facilities.
  3. Unstable voice communications that rely on the internet (i.e., cloud-based or “hosted”).

Weather conditions can affect these even further.

Telecom Strategies, a PNA vendor, is exploring alternative strategies to fulfill that need either as a primary broadband supplier, a backup supplier or as an interim while existing internet providers are developing their infrastructure.
