Despite having an incarcerated loved one, veteran journalist and professor Shaheen Pasha knew little about life inside prison walls and the stories of those living there.
Through Pasha’s on-going conversations with her imprisoned best friend, she learned of the anguish that occurs in those who are behind bars, and realized that she had to do something to make a difference. “The psychological damage it does to not have any sort of outlet or form of expression haunted me,” Pasha said. “I felt helpless, like there was nothing I could do but watch someone I care about wither away inside.”
Determined to bring change to the prison system, Pasha reached out to the jail’s education administrators and offered to teach media writing to inmates.
