The New Castle News – Reporter (New Castle, PA)

The New Castle News in New Castle, Pennsylvania, seeks an energetic, enterprising full-time reporter to cover sports in Lawrence County.

Lawrence County is a sports hotbed that has produced numerous professional and Division-I athletes as well as two current NFL players (Malik Hooker and Geno Stone). While this position will focus mainly on high school sports, Lawrence County is also home to a Division-III college, Westminster College, and is located about an hour north of Pittsburgh where several of our teams play for WPIAL (District 7) championships. The reporter, in a two-person department, will help cover the county’s eight high schools, write feature stories and take information over the phone.

A college background or the equivalent, experience in writing and excellent grammatical skills are a must for this position. Experience taking photos and videos and using social media is a plus, but training can be provided.

In recent years, several county teams advanced to WPIAL and state championship games in Hershey or at Penn State University. During the 2020-21 school year, Lawrence County had teams play for state championships in football, girls basketball (two teams) and baseball (two teams).

Interested candidates should email a resume, work samples and cover letter to sports editor Ron Poniewasz Jr. and managing editor Pete Sirianni

The position offers health insurance, paid holidays, vacation and sick time as well as a 401(k).
