Herald-Standard’s Give-A-Christmas campaign raises funds for local Salvation Army programs

For 40 years, The Herald-Standard (Uniontown) has conducted its annual Give-A-Christmas campaign to support Salvation Army service centers in Fayette County. The campaign’s goal this year is to raise $10,000, with all donations remaining in the local area to help fund the Salvation Army’s many community programs.

Salvation Army Make A Christmas Tree Herald Standard
Each holiday season, the Salvation Army’s Angel Trees are set up in stores across the country. The trees contain tags with gifts for children in need.

The holiday fundraiser began four decades ago when the Herald-Standard appealed to readers to support Salvation Army service centers in Fayette County, with the initial hope of raising a few thousand dollars to assist residents in need.

Readers responded generously, and Give-A-Christmas became an annual campaign.

Held each year from Thanksgiving through Dec. 23, Give-A-Christmas donations are accepted in person at the Herald-Standard’s office or by mail.

Donors are encouraged to include holiday wishes or make contributions in memory or honor of loved ones. Over the years, the campaign has received support from both local readers and contributors from across the country, raising more than $1 million for the Salvation Army.

Bob Pinarski, regional publisher for the Herald-Standard, said the newspaper is honored to host the fundraiser. “There has been an increase in the number of people who need help this year, whether it’s with food, heating bills or shelter. Give-A-Christmas is a small way we can help those in our community who need it the most,” he said. “We’re thankful to the many donors who’ve supported the campaign and hope they will continue to do so for many years to come.”

Christine Bell, employee-in-charge at the Salvation Army in Uniontown, said there has been a substantial increase in the number of people coming to the food pantry or the Kindness Kafe soup kitchen.
