Core Principles of Journalism Ethics and Common Ethical Dilemmas

Journalism shapes public understanding, influences decisions, and holds power to account. Ethical lapses—fabrication, bias, conflicts of interest—can erode trust quickly. This session explores the principles that guide responsible reporting and the gray areas journalists navigate daily.

Core principles include:

  • Accuracy & verification with priorities of factual correctness and verification of information while avoiding assumptions and unverified claims.
  • Maintain distance from political, financial or personal interests and avoid gifts, favors or relationships that could compromise objectivity.
  • Represent all sides of a story accurately to prove fairness and impartiality.
  • Correct mistakes transparently and explain editorial decisions when appropriate.
  • Balance the public’s right to know with potential harm to individuals and consider privacy, trauma and vulnerable populations.

We’ll review some common ethical dilemmas such as anonymous sources, graphic content, conflicts of interest, speedy vs. accuracy and AI and deepfakes, as well as ways to prevent them from happening.
