We need a detailed-oriented editor with a thorough understanding of AP style. Exceptional command of grammar and spelling is a must. Copy Editor Essential Job Functions (Full Description):

  • Assists team of writers and editors with AP Style proofing and copy editing, prioritizing focus based on deadlines.
  • Edits stories to make sure content is fair, balanced, accurate and compelling.
  • Works with a digital-first mentality.
  • Flags stories that may raise ethical and legal concerns.
  • Writes headlines and summaries.
  • Writes and edits photo captions and other story elements as necessary.
  • Provides support services, such as typing of recipes and news releases.
  • Proofs completed pages, checking all headlines, cutlines and design elements for accuracy and clarity.
  • Processes listings for special publications such as the annual Fair Guide and Ag Directory, and recipes for the B section, especially during June Dairy Month.
  • Compiles weekly farm calendar and auction sales report.
  • Handles other duties and tasks as determined by the editor and section editors.

What are we looking for? 

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or English.
  • Experience in a newsroom environment.
  • Established editing skills.
  • Background in or understanding of agricultural issues.
  • Sound critical judgment on matters of reader interest, fairness, credibility, ethics and law. 
  • Ability to develop story ideas and to sharpen ideas proposed by staff.
  • Ability to write attention-grabbing, accurate headlines, as well as succinct summaries and captions.
  • Ability to manage time, schedules and focus on long-range objectives.
  • Ability to work collegially and creatively with staff and colleagues at all levels. 
  • Ability to work respectfully with readers, critics, community organizations and leaders.
  • Enthusiastic about working in a business environment in which every employee seeks to be great every day.
