Environmental Reporter – Chestnut Hill Local

Environmental reporter wanted for award-winning Local | The Chestnut Hill Local

The Chestnut Hill Local is seeking a dedicated environmental reporter to help expand our commitment to serving the Northwest Philadelphia region. Thanks to support from Report for America, we’re looking for a passionate journalist to join our award-winning team and help tell the crucial environmental stories of our communities.

For 67 years, the Chestnut Hill Local has served as more than just a community newspaper. We’ve been a trusted friend, a town square, and a passionate advocate for our residents. We understand how much our readers care about our shared environment, so as we extend our reach into neighboring communities, we are deepening our coverage of this critical subject.

Northwest Philadelphia stands at a critical intersection between the requirements of an urban condition and the importance of preserving our natural environment. Our neighborhoods face unique challenges: from the preservation of the Wissahickon Valley to challenges of illegal dumping, from stormwater management to concerns about environmental justice. These stories deserve more than just passing attention. They require thorough, nuanced coverage from a reporter who is embedded in the community.

We are offering something unique: the chance to dig deep into environmental stories that other media outlets might overlook, yet are of profound importance to the people who live here. With 8,000 dedicated print readers and a digital reach of 60,000 monthly, your words will reach an engaged audience hungry for substantive local coverage.

Our ideal candidate will bring more than just journalism skills. They’ll bring a passion for storytelling and a curiosity about the people who shape our communities. So whether you’re a seasoned reporter or a talented newcomer with determination and grit, we’re interested in talking with you. You’ll join a collaborative team that values mentorship and professional growth, and a newsroom that has been recognized as a “news organization of the year” for two consecutive years by the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association.

We believe the best reporting comes from journalists who are part of the community they cover, so we’re looking for someone who either lives in or is willing to relocate to Northwest Philadelphia. When you walk the same streets, breathe the same air, and experience the same environmental challenges as your readers, your reporting takes on new depths of understanding and relevance.

This position offers competitive compensation, benefits, and the flexibility of a hybrid work arrangement. If you believe in the power of local news to create positive change, and you’re ready to help write the next chapter of Northwest Philadelphia’s environmental story, we want to hear from you.

Applications are due Feb. 3, and should go directly to ReportforAmerica.org Please send a copy of your materials to editor@chestnuthilllocal.com, so we can keep our eye out for good local candidates.

The environment isn’t just another beat – it’s the story of our shared future. Join us in telling it.
