The Daily Collegian seeks a general manager to lead Penn State’s student-run news outlet. The ideal candidate will be prepared to guide the Collegian through the modern news business landscape and is, in effect, the CEO of Collegian Inc. The role will require strategic, innovative thinking about reporting the news in print, web, mobile, social media, podcasts and email. Additionally, the candidate must possess a vision for driving
revenue through various means such as university funding, advertising, subscriptions, grants, donations, social media, events and other non-traditional pathways. The general manager is head of the leadership team and is responsible for short- and long-term operations of The Daily Collegian. He/she acts as a liaison between the Collegian and key stakeholders such as the dean of Bellisario College of Communications, student media consortium members, alumni and key business partners. The general manager is responsible for developing an annual budget, administration and ensuring key operations in circulation, accounts receivable and payable, payroll, business continuity, publishing schedules, processing incoming and outgoing mail, fleet maintenance and student safety.
Candidates should have:
● A bachelor’s degree in journalism or communications
● 10+ years experience in news reporting and newsroom management
● Preferred experiences include managing and mentoring early-career journalists, and teaching college students
● Experience with Google Analytics, BLOX CMS, Flytedesk and Mailchimp is a plus
Salary will be between $75,000 and $85,000 based on experience. Benefits include health care and paid time off. The Daily Collegian is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization partially funded through students’ activity fees at Penn State University. The GM answers to the board of directors and manages a professional staff that includes a finance/distribution manager, systems manager and advertising manager.
