The group managing editor provides editorial leadership for multiple newspapers in the region, overseeing newsroom operations, content strategy, audience growth and staff development. This position is responsible for ensuring high-quality journalism across multiple publications while managing day-to-day newsroom workflows, mentoring reporters and editors, coordinating print and digital production and driving community engagement.
The ideal candidate is an experienced journalist and newsroom leader with strong editing, reporting, organizational and coaching skills who can manage multiple deadlines and publications simultaneously.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide a compelling, hyper-local product on a daily basis comprised of news and sports, feature stories and standard community newspaper fare such as obituaries, police and courts, social news and community events. Work to include a small sampling of the most important state and national news of the day when fitting, as well as interesting editorial commentary — all presented in an organized, well-edited format.
- Gather, review and approve time cards and expense reports and present them to the bookkeeper. Process vacation and time-off requests. Contract with and arrange payments due to correspondents/stringers/freelancers.
- Develop and maintain strong public relations by way of sound community journalism, involvement and open communication with our various constituencies.
- Lead editorial operations for multiple newspapers and special sections
- Supervise, coach and evaluate reporters, editors, photographers and other newsroom personnel
- Plan and coordinate daily, enterprise and breaking news coverage
- Edit stories for accuracy, clarity, fairness, style, grammar and legal compliance
- Manage staffing schedules and workflow priorities
- Ensure timely production of print and digital content while meeting all publication deadlines
- Develop content strategies that increase readership, audience engagement and digital traffic
- Analyze audience metrics and implement strategies to improve performance across digital platforms and social media channels
- Foster a collaborative newsroom culture focused on accountability, innovation and professional growth
- Work closely with advertising, circulation, production and executive leadership to support organizational goals
- Represent the organization at community events and maintain strong relationships with local stakeholders
- Uphold the highest standards of journalism ethics and professional conduct
- Protect the newspaper from charges of libel, defamation, invasion of privacy or other litigation.
Qualifications
- Five years of newsroom experience preferred, including supervisory or management responsibilities.
- Strong news judgment and understanding of community journalism
- Excellent writing, editing and communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to lead teams and manage multiple projects under deadline pressure
- Knowledge of AP style and media law
- Experience with digital publishing platforms, social media strategy, audience analytics and content management systems
- Proficiency with newspaper design, pagination and newsroom technology preferred
