WITF is a trusted, valued supplier of programs and services that satisfies and encourages curiosity in the 19 counties it serves in the central Pennsylvania region. We are dedicated to high-impact journalism that holds power accountable and elevates underreported stories. We believe local and state-level decisions often have the greatest effect on people’s lives — and yet receive the least national coverage. Our mission is to inspire lifelong learning by connecting people and communities of Pennsylvania through trusted journalism, thoughtful discussion and educational experiences.
We’re seeking a sharp, curious, and persistent State Capitol Reporter to cover the key issues, power players, and policy decisions shaping Central Pennsylvania. This role goes beyond daily legislative coverage — we’re looking for a reporter who can find the human stakes in political decisions, hold leaders to account, and explain how complex systems affect real lives.
The ideal candidate has a deep interest in state-level politics, strong sourcing instincts, and a passion for watchdog and solutions-oriented journalism. You’ll work closely with our editors and fellow reporters across beats to tell stories that matter — with a focus on public service, equity, and impact.
Key Responsibilities:
· Produce a steady mix of breaking news, enterprise reporting, and investigations from the statehouse
· Focus on Pennsylvania’s governor and General Assembly.
· Files audio stories – newscast spots and long-form – for the WITF and NPR radio audiences, at least 4 per week.
· Incorporates audio, video and photographs into online coverage.
· Uses regular feedback from newsroom supervisors and content partners to shape story selection and execution.
· Posts stories as assigned to WITF.org and LancasterOnline.com and provide web content for public radio network member stations.
· Serves as a guest on WITF, NPR, and affiliate public affairs programming as requested.
· Takes part in on-air pledge drives
Qualifications:
· 2+ years of reporting experience, preferably covering politics, policy, or state government
· Strong writing and storytelling skills with a commitment to accuracy and fairness
· A talent for making complex topics understandable and engaging
· Demonstrated commitment to inclusive reporting and diverse sourcing
· Familiarity with public records, state legislative processes, and accountability journalism tools
· Comfortable working independently and collaboratively in a mission-driven environment
Why work at Pennon and WITF? We offer:
· A salary commensurate with experience and competitive in the Central Pa market
· Competitive benefits that include health, dental, vision, paid time off, and 401(k) options
· A mission-driven organization that values growth and collaboration
· Opportunities for professional development, mentoring, and national visibility
Salary Range: $48,000-54,000/year
