Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association members encompass a wide variety of styles and formats, always providing important editorial content that keeps their audiences informed. In most instances, those audiences represent local communities or metro areas.
The Chesapeake Bay Journal covers an entire ecosystem of the Mid-Atlantic region.
For more than 30 years, the Bay Journal has reported on environmental issues important to communities throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed, from northern and central Pennsylvania to most of Maryland, a large portion of Virginia, the District of Columbia, and even parts of West Virginia and Delaware. A unique niche among other news outlets, Bay Journal coverage typically includes stories on stream restoration, farm stewardship, outdoor recreation, forest management, land conservation and energy projects.
Through its print and e-mail editions, website, podcasts, films and shared content, the Bay Journal reaches a monthly average of about 250,000 people. Print is still in great demand among its subscribers, with 50,000 readers per month.

About The Chesapeake Bay Journal
The Bay Journal also operates as 501(c)3 nonprofit, independent news outlet without any ties to advocacy groups. That distinction is important in today’s media landscape, as some newspapers of general circulation use fundraising techniques to support specific journalism initiatives while others have ownership transferred directly to nonprofit organizations where they continue to publish.
Producing editorial content as a nonprofit media outlet has its challenges. Most funding comes from grants and reader donations. Bay Journal Editor and Executive Director Lara Lutz said the current budget generally falls into thirds. “One-third of our funding is through private grants, one-third through a federal grant from the Environmental Protection Agency and one-third through direct reader donations,” she said.
Lutz also offered some key advice for soliciting donations. “Build your list,” she said. “Don’t rely solely on email. Securing physical addresses for direct mail campaigns can make a big difference.”
The Chesapeake Bay Journal proudly supports Pennsylvania newspapers, as well, by providing its own articles to all media outlets free of charge. This offer supports local media that may be strained to cover important stories while keeping environmental news front and center.
