A vital source of connection and accountability, The Homepage is a free monthly community newspaper serving 11,000 households across Pittsburgh’s Fifth City Council District, including Greater Hazelwood, Greenfield, The Run, Lincoln Place, Hays and New Homestead.
Published by Hazelwood Initiative Inc., the paper is part of the nonprofit’s mission of development without displacement.
Operating out of the Hazelwood Initiative office, The Homepage is led by managing editor Juliet Martinez, its only paid staff member, alongside a contracted proofreader and a dedicated corps of volunteer writers.
“As the managing editor of The Homepage, I have the pleasure and honor of sharing the stories of people in and around Pittsburgh’s Greater Hazelwood neighborhood,” said Martinez.
“The circulation area may be small, but it is full of interesting people and important stories.”

The paper’s mission is to provide fair and accountable coverage of issues that directly affect its readers, including community meetings, housing, development, transit and environmental justice.
Guest writers are encouraged to submit a variety of work, which include letters to the editor, school updates, opinion pieces, personal essays, original poems, reported articles and meeting reports. Photos, infographics and other artwork with or without a written submission are also welcome.
The Homepage functions as a community newspaper in two ways: it delivers hyper-local reporting relevant to its neighborhoods, and it relies on the contributions of residents. Poets, commentators and citizen journalists regularly share their voices, making the paper a platform for news, dialogue and creativity.
The paper maintains membership in the Pennsylvania NewsMedia Association, the Pittsburgh Media Partnership, and the Pittsburgh Community Newspaper Network, collaborating with publications such as Print and The Northside Chronicle. Together, these partnerships expand its reach while keeping its focus on the residents it serves.
